Beer Style: Russian Imperial Stout

Country of Origin: United States of America (Colorado)

Abv: 10.2%

Background: I don’t have too many Russian Imperial Stouts this time of year. I flock to lagers and pale ales during the spring and summer. Yet, I have had a curiosity about this beer for some time. It was time to pursue it. I am glad I did.

Taste & Aroma:  Cocoa and licorice are tantalizing flames of aromas as they strike the nostrils. The cocoa is lingering on the nose throughout the consumption of this beer. Anise, cocoa, roasted malt, and a woody resin provide a wide constellation of flavors in this ale. This is a complex Russian Imperial Stout. As the beer warms, a bready malt in contrast to the warming alcohol becomes present.

Final Analysis: This is a delightful example of this beer style. Left Hand makes great beer, and it is no surprise they have a brilliant Russian Imperial Stout in their portfolio.
