Background: Smuttynose Brewing has a funny name. This is a seriously high quality beer though with a great reputation in brewing from my research. I’ve not had any of their beers. I have had a lot of porter in my beer explorations. Let’s tell that engineer to ring his bell.
Taste & Aroma: Chocolate fills your glass and enters the room when you pour this beer. It has a good typical porter aroma. Roasted malt is there too along with these nibs of cocoa. The stage is set for some great flavors here. I taste coffee, roasted malt, warming booze, and cocoa nibs at the finish. This is a great beer when it comes to warming you up after a chilly fall eve or a long winter’s night.
Regarding the coffee flavor I find it to be similar to a French Press brewed French Roast Coffee. This is a gourmet coffee flavor, not a gas station coffee flavor. As the beer warms, the roasted malt really shines through this jet black brew. As stout season nears this could become a go-to beer.
Final Analysis: Smuttynose’s Robust Porter’s name says it all. This is a robust and enjoyable brew that is perfect for this time of year. I’ve never really explored Smuttynose’s beers, but this is out of this world and I’m glad I started now. I’m ready to try more.
