I was meaning to be doing this for Pearl Harbor Day on December 7th. But then I thought about waiting as it would be more appropriate for me to as this song is about the cost of war rather than that one day of infamy in America’s story.
“First we waved hello, then we waved goodbye.”
The five Sullivan brothers of Waterloo, Iowa served their country in one of the pivotal conflicts in human history. They enlisted with the condition that they would only serve together. It was a typical practice for them to be seperated. They were an anomalous group. And unfortunately they met tragedy. These five brothers paid the ultimate price to keep the free world safe from the Axis powers.
“Uncle Sam will send you a telegram so he doesn’t have to tell you over the phone. I heard she cracked up when she found out what the war had cost, when all five of her boys were lost.”
Here is an acoustic version of this sad but necessary song that remembers these men.
“Go ahead cry, cry, cry, we regret to inform you that all your sons have passed away, so change your blue star to gold…”
