Background: This is my third review of a Shipyard Brewing beer. I love their products. Chamberlain Pale Ale is another grand slam for them. I’m a big fan of Nathaniel Chamberlain, and his role in the American Civil War paired with this beer excites a history buff like myself. After the American Civil War Chamberlain served as the 32nd governor of Maine.

Civil War artist Ken Hendricksen did a fantastic label for this beer. It captures Chamberlain’s drive and noble character. His role at the Battle of Gettysburg is one any student of American military history should be acquainted with—read this and be informed about that role.

Read about his regiment too.

Taste & Aroma: A rich floral aroma with hints of hay and biscuits tickles my nose before I take the first sip. This beer is smooth, malty, and the middle is punctuated with a spicy hop character that serves as a great link between the malty start and the lingering bready finish.

Final Analysis: This is a brilliant sessionable ale and also a fitting tribute to Governor (Brevet Major-General,Brigadier-General) Nathaniel Chamberlain. I would love to try this from the tap, but it is perfect from the bottle. Apparently, it used to be only available from the tap. Try Shipyard’s other beers I’ve reviewed here and here.
